Milan’s poor results and Paulo Fonseca’s group management led to the coach’s dismissal, but it is unclear why the club didn’t sack him last week when his replacement, Sergio Conceiçao, would have had more time to work with the team.

Milan’s disappointing results in Serie A are the main reason why Fonseca was sacked after just six months in charge.

Not surprisingly, club directors expected a better position in the table after the first half of the campaign. The Rossoneri currently sit 8th in the standings, eight points below a Champions League spot, and have a game in hand.

Why Milan sacked Fonseca and one unanswered question

According to Calciomercato, club directors and Zlatan Ibrahimovic were also not entirely satisfied with Fonseca’s group management. The Portuguese had benched Rafael Leao and Theo Hernandez multiple times as he was unhappy with their attitude.

Calciomercato and Sportitalia reported that Fonseca and Ibra had a harsh confrontation before the Roma game last night, but the Portuguese coach denied it.

A clause in Fonseca’s contract also had an impact, as it will allow the Rossoneri to terminate the contract in June, given that the coach was sacked in the first six months of his tenure.

Multiple sources, including Calciomercato.com, report that the Portuguese would have been sacked regardless of the result against Roma on Sunday.

Milan, in fact, had already reached an agreement with Conceiçao and his agent Jorge Mendes a few days earlier.

If this is the case, however, it’s hard to understand why club directors didn’t sack Fonseca immediately after the win over Verona on December 20. Conceiçao would have had nine days to work with the team then.

On the other hand, the ex-Serie A winger will meet the team for the first time today and lead his first training session on Tuesday before flying to Saudi Arabia for the Supercoppa semifinal against Juventus and his son Francisco.
